Efficiently manage the shadow copy of Windows Server 2008

[IT expert network exclusive In fact, Shadow Copies (Shadow Copies) is not a feature of Windows Server 2008. However, for the Server system platform such as Windows Server 2008, the use of shadow copies is more important. With the shadow copy feature, administrators can create a copy of the backup on a specified volume, and we can view a copy of these backups as a time snapshot, which can be restored to a previous version as needed. Therefore, it can greatly guarantee the security of server data. However, the shadow copy management process under the graphical interface-based console is cumbersome and not efficient enough, and the operation under the command line is much faster and more efficient. Therefore, the shadow copy management technology under the command line is a must for administrators. I hope this article can help you do this.

1. Introduction to vssadmin Tools

vssadmin is a tool used to manage shadow copies in Windows Server 2008. With vssadmin, we can not only manage shadow copies in the local system, but also log in to remote servers through Remote Desktop to configure and manage the volumes on them.

2, enable shadow copies

By default, each volume of the Windows Server 2008 system is enabled for shadow copies. If the shadow copy feature is turned off due to human factors or other reasons, we can quickly launch it from the command line. The command format for enabling shadow copies is "vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=ForVolumeSpec /on=OnVolumeSpec". Where "/for=ForVolumeSpec" specifies the local volume on which the shadow copy is to be enabled, and "/on=OnVolumeSpec" specifies that a copy of the specified volume is saved on that volume. Of course, the volume to enable the shadow copy and the volume to save the copy can be one volume. However, the author suggests a more scientific approach to segregation.

Let's take an example. If you want to enable the shadow copy function of the local C drive, and save a copy of the volume to the D drive. We can execute the command "vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=c: /on=d:" from the command line. If the command "vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=e: /on=e:" is executed, a shadow copy of the E disk is started, and a copy of the disk is also saved in the E disk. (Fig. 1)
