Windows 2000 operating system boot menu details

Windows 2000 boot menu has become a very useful diagnostic tool after the previous versions of the refurbishment, providing more complete troubleshooting functions than the previous versions. The original intention of the security mode is to allow users to enter the operating system with the minimum configuration, to remove the factors that cause system failure, so it is not supported for CD-ROM, network and printer, but compared with Windows NT VGA Mode, Windows 2000 Safe Mode provides a lot of useful features.

The Windows 2000 boot menu is slightly different from other Windows operating systems. After starting the computer, see the “To troubleshoot and understand Windows 2000 advanced startup options, press F8” and immediately press F8, then the Windows 2000 Advanced Boot Options menu will appear. Next, let's take a look at what options it has:

1. Safe Mode: This option will only load the most basic configuration drivers and services available, including mouse, keyboard, CD-ROM drive. And standard 16-color VGA color. In addition, Remote Procedure Call, Logical Disk Manager, Event Log, and Plug and Play can be used. Safe Mode also automatically skips all programs in the Launcher group, as well as Adminstrator, All Users and User Profile. The system works fine, but there is no protection. Since the system does not load the NIC driver, you can only log in as the local user. After entering the system, you can start to find problems, perform some actions, such as resetting the graphics card or network card, delete the problematic software, or execute the anti-virus program. After entering Safe Mode, the familiar security mode words will appear in the corner of the screen. At the same time, the background is also black.

2, Safe Mode with Networking: In addition to providing all the functions of Safe Mode, the network driver and service will also be loaded, and the server and the local machine will also execute the group. Group Policy. The screen in this mode looks similar to the Safe Mode screen without network function, but with the network function you can connect to the corporate network, install software, or get some files or program tools to help you solve the problem. In addition, you also have Internet access, which allows you to download the latest drivers or software patches, and to eliminate some software problems installed on the system.

3, Safe Mode With Command Prompt: The function is exactly the same as the security mode, the only difference is that the system will load the instruction compiler instead of the resource manager. In this mode, you can use the command input to work in the full-screen Windows environment, but the security mode words will still be displayed in the four corners of the screen, reminding you that it is still in an abnormal state. To exit, you must press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at the same time to select the shutdown option. It is useless to type Exit directly at the command prompt, this will only close the command prompt window, but will not restart the computer.

4. Enable Boot Logging: This option will generate the Ntbtlog.txt log file, which will be stored in C:WINNT. The driver loading status will be recorded when all systems are powered on. When selected, the opportunity to directly launch the Windows Normal Mode state and provide all the drivers and software results that are normally loaded. After entering Windows 2000, you can go to C:WINNTNtbtlog.txt to check the record. This file can continuously record multiple startup processes, and the system will not re-establish it unless you delete the current log. To avoid confusion, it is recommended to delete the old Ntbtlog.txt before starting Enable Boot Logging. If the old log still exists, you can enter safe mode to delete it. By looking at the startup log, we can figure out which aspect is causing the problem.

5, Enable VGA Mode (Enable VGA Mode): Allows the system to automatically set the screen split rate to 640x480 after booting, so that you can change the set value that the previous setting error causes the screen to display. The biggest difference between VGA Mode and General Safe Mode is that the former uses the current display driver of the system, while the latter uses the Vga.sys driver.

6. Last Known Good Configuration: This function can quickly correct any system setting errors when returning to the last system startup.

7, Directory Service Recovery Mode (Windows 2000 Domain Controllers Only): This option provides system information, such as memory capacity, current patch Version, system installation time, etc. This option can help you fix Active Directory issues, such as Active Directory repair when there is not enough hard disk space.

8. Debugging Mode: This is an advanced tool for troubleshooting Windows 2000 server. It can start the system in core debugging mode, which is convenient for remote users to analyze the output of debugging software. Remote users can directly connect to the computer using the modem, or directly connect to the computer via COM2 and the cable.

If the computer works in safe mode, you can only log in to the local workstation; if you want to use the network function, you must choose Safe Mode with Networking, this mode supports TCP/IP and NetBEUI network protocol, but Novell's IPX protocol does not support it, so if you are using this option, any host that only supports IPX will not be able to connect. If you still want to connect to the Novell server, you must use a Novell client that supports TCP/IP. Regardless of which way you log in, this security feature prevents others from entering safe mode without authorization.

Once you enter safe mode, you can start to find and fix the computer error, but in some cases Safe Mode can't save your computer. One of the cases is when the boot file is damaged. With these files missing, Windows 2000 simply won't start, let alone enter Safe Mode. At this time, you can only save the computer through the emergency repair disk. In short, Windows 2000's boot menu has many new features, which is a good helper to eliminate computer problems; and options like Safe Mode With Networking, support for CD-ROM, etc. are useful new features, and the practicality is indeed improved than the previous version. Quite a lot.
