Customize your Windows XP SP2

For ordinary users, the more functions SP2 provides, the more trouble it brings to the system. Because although the high-end configuration of the computer has gradually become popular, but like the author, it continues to drive the old "stupid" car people still abound, how do we go to flexible not only include all versions of Windows XP including SP2 : Go to & ldquo; ruin & rdquo;, stay & ldquo; essence & rdquo;, because our operating system is not used to do "server", and only use the "simple, comfortable".

First, use “ add /remove Windows components & rdquo; function

For Windows XP SP2 provides a lot of services, features, by default, we can open “ control panel → Add or remove programs & rdquo; and select “ add /remove windows components & rdquo; to uninstall a useless windows components.

But not all Windows components allow us to manually uninstall them. Even if you open “Add/Remove Programs  you will not be able to find their tracks. For example, “Windows automatic update”etc.

Second, use Xplite for system slimming

Step 1: Run Xplite to start the main program interface. At the same time, we can also see the type of operating system we use and the detailed version number on the Xplite start page.

Step 2: While confirming that the version number is correct, click on “Windows File Protection” to enter the settings page.

At this time, some friends may feel very strange. Why not follow the program prompts to proceed to the next step, but enter the file protection page? In fact, the reason is very simple, because we must cancel the system's file protection function before component setting for Windows XP, to prevent errors in the process of uninstalling or setting components due to automatic intervention of Windows.

Step 3: In the <quo;Windows File Protection” option on the left side of the File Protection Settings page, select “Closed" or directly“Disabled” and click “Apply" to complete the setup.

Tip: During the process of closing the file protection, the system will automatically restart the system. If there is no prompt, it is recommended to manually restart it to ensure the settings take effect.

Step 4: Run Xplite again and switch the settings page to “Install/Uninstall Components”.

Tip: In general, for example, the author's Windows XP is Home Edition, and the components (files) that can be freely uninstalled (updated) are as follows:

1.Operating System Options

Windows Roaming, Help and Support Center, Program Compatibility Wizard, Extra Fonts, DllCache Backup Files, Startup Read-Ahead Files, Upgrade Package Backup Files, Driver Cache, Search Assistant, Microsoft Wizard, Text-to-Speech Support, User Avatar.

2. Multimedia items

Windows media player, Windows movie maker, Windows XP theme sound, recorder, Media player.

3. Server component items

All can be uninstalled.

4. Auxiliary tool items

All can be uninstalled.

5. Attachment items

If necessary, you can keep the "drawing, writing board, etc." simple tools, other uninstall.

6.Communication and message items

You can keep the USR/3Com modem driver and wireless network card automatic configuration, and all others will be uninstalled.

7. Network Utility Items

MSN Explorer, Dial-Up Networking Connection Management. If you feel that automatic updates are annoying, you can also uninstall them. Manually update the system if necessary.

8.System Service Items

Uninterruptible Power Service, Smart Card Service.

9.System Tools and Utilities Items

If you don't like the Security Center provided by Windows XP SP2, we might as well uninstall it to improve the system. Run or start speed. In this case, we can just keep “Windows Script Host”

10, game items

Uninstall all.

Step 5: Select the option you want to uninstall, tick off the previous checkmark, and click “Next” to save the current settings, and the program will automatically start the relevant uninstall operation.

Tip: If you pop up an inexplicable dialog during the uninstall process, we don't care about it, just click OK.

Step 6: After the uninstaller is finished, follow the prompts to restart the computer.

Third, clear windows non-component files

After the above settings, we Most of the useless windows components have been uninstalled, and the hard disk space occupied by the system has dropped from 1G to hundreds of megabytes. However, we can't stop here, we will continue to manually clean up the useless windows non-components.

Step 1: Open the system properties, select the best performance in the advanced performance options, and turn off all windows effects. So that you can easily delete the windows theme file. (Figure 17)

Step 2: In the “Explorer”, select Open “Tools →Folder Options →View”, Remove “ Hide Protected or Operating System File & rdquo; and select “ show all files & rdquo;. (Figure 18)

Step 3: Open X: WINDOWSSYSTEM32 (X is the partition where the operating system is located) folder, delete the following files:

help (help file) Installer (installed files) Backup)

ime (Input Method) LastGood.Tmp (last configured correctly)

inf (driven INF) All files in Resources (not including this folder)

Step 4: Go to X:Program FilesWindows Media Player and delete all installation backup files under Installer.
