Explain what new features and techniques are available in the Windows 7 system start menu.

In Windows 7, you have more control over the programs and files that appear on the Start menu. The Start menu is essentially a whiteboard that you can organize and customize to suit your preferences.

Start Menu

In previous versions of Windows, managing files meant organizing these files in different folders and subfolders. In Windows 7, you can also use a library to organize and access files by type, regardless of where they are stored.

The library can collect files from different locations and display them as a collection without having to move them from their storage location. There are four default libraries (documents, music, pictures, and videos), but you can create new libraries for other collections. By default, the document, music, and photo gallery are displayed on the Start menu. As with other items on the Start menu, you can add or remove libraries, or customize their appearance.

Search

The Start menu contains a search box that you can use to find files, folders, programs, and emails stored on your computer. Once you start typing a word or phrase in the search box, the search starts automatically and the search results temporarily fill the Start menu space above the search box.

Organize search results into groups based on the type of project for each result and the location on the computer it is on. For example, you might see search results organized by program, by "control panel> tasks, by library (such as documents or images), and by file. The best search results for each group (not all matches) will appear under the group heading. You can click on a result to open the program or file, or you can click the group header to view a complete list of search results for that group in Windows Explorer.

“Power”Button Options

“The Shutdown” button appears in the lower right corner of the Start menu.

After clicking "Shutdown", the computer will close all open programs and shut down the computer. You can choose to have the button perform other actions, such as putting your computer into hibernation mode or allowing other users to log in.
