Customizing the Start Screen Background

in Windows 8 System

In the Windows 8 Developer Preview, the background image of the Start Screen of the Metro interface is stored in the shsxs.dll file in PNG format. Tell us how to customize the background.

In the Windows 8 pre-beta (Pre-Beta), the shsxs.dll file no longer exists. The background image of the start screen is stored in the imageres.dll file in PNG format, and the user can control it. Change the background image of the start screen in the personalization of the panel. Currently, you can only choose one of the eight images that Microsoft officially has built into the system. You cannot use custom images.

Unlike the developer preview, in Windows 8 pre-beta, you can no longer customize a PNG image of RGB color mode as a background through the editor. You need to use an 8-bit index PNG. image. Otherwise, the new background image will not display properly.

The effect shown above is very ugly. If you want it to display properly, you must use the original background palette to create an 8-bit indexed image using tools such as Photoshop.
