Win10 market share has approached 8% Win7 system is still mainstream

Computer Store News: Microsoft offers a free upgrade to Windows 10, but this move has not achieved the expected results of many people. According to Net Application data, after three months of Windows 10 open download, this version of Windows system market share is slightly less than 8%.

In the first four weeks of the official launch, Windows 10 was installed to more than 75 million PCs, and after 10 weeks, the installed capacity exceeded 110 million. Although we have not yet got the latest data, Microsoft's goal is to install Windows 10 to 1 billion devices in two to three years. Such devices include not only PCs, but also smartphones, game consoles, and other products.

As of September, Windows 10's market share was 6.63%, and it rose further by 1.31% to 7.94% in October. However, Windows 10's market share growth is slowing significantly: in the first month of open downloads, Windows 10's share has risen nearly 5%, but the second and third months of growth is only slightly higher than 1%. In response to this slowdown, Microsoft has announced a partnership with Baidu to promote Windows 10 in China and to position Windows 10 as a "recommended upgrade" among Windows 7 and Windows 8 users.

Operating System Market Share

In the process of Windows 10 market share growth, the share of older versions of Windows is declining. As of the end of October, Windows 8 market share fell by 0.06% to 2.54%, and Windows 8.1 market share fell by 0.04% to 13.22%. It is expected that the market share of these two versions of the operating system will drop to less than 10% by next year. The combined market share of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 has never exceeded 20%, with the highest point being 16.45% in May this year.

Prior to the release of Windows 10, Windows 7’s market share exceeded 60% in June. However, Windows 7 is unlikely to achieve such results again. In August of this year, the market share of Windows 7 dropped significantly by 0.82% to 55.71%.

Although Windows 10's market share will gradually increase, Windows 7 will be the most popular operating system for a long time. In September 2012, Windows 7 surpassed Windows XP to become the number one Windows version in the market, and has since maintained a leading position, and its market share has steadily increased. In October of this year, the market share of Windows 7 fell to the level of early 2015. In January of this year, the share of Windows 7 was 55.92%.

Windows Vista's share increased by 0.01% to 1.74%, while Windows XP's share fell by 0.53% to 11.68%. The free upgrade for Windows 10 does not apply to Vista and XP. But Microsoft still hopes that the market share of Windows XP will drop to single digits this year. In April 2014, Windows XP no longer received technology spending, and corporate users are responding.

Overall, Windows’ market share fell by 0.12% to 90.42% in October, while Mac OS’s share rose 0.28% to 8.00%, while Linux fell 0.17% to 1.57%.

Net Application data comes from 160 million unique visitors to 40,000 customer sites, so its market share is based on the number of users.
