After installing Windows SP2, why can't the program run

? /Recently, Microsoft released the software from Redman Studio and third-party software vendors, installed Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (hereinafter referred to as SP2) Some applications that do not work properly afterwards. These include applications for web servers, remote desktops, file sharing, FTP clients, multimedia streaming, E-mail, anti-virus tools, network system management, and gaming. So, what is the reason for these programs not working properly after installing SP2? What method can I solve?

In fact, to make these applications stop working real "culprit" is an improved feature in SP2, the "Windows Firewall", it limits the communication between the computer and the network, so that the client The application cannot successfully receive data from the server (eg FTP client, multimedia streaming software, etc.), or the server with SP2 cannot respond to the client's request (web server, remote desktop, file sharing, etc.). Some programs or games must receive information from the network to function properly, while Windows Firewall shuts down their communication ports, causing the program to not function properly.

Enabling Programs via the Security Alerts Dialog Box

Figure 1: "Blocking" Stops Many Programs

Sometimes, when Windows Firewall blocks a program, A security alert dialog will appear. The dialog includes: keep blocking, unblock and ask three buttons later. Unblocking allows programs to connect to the network to receive or send data, and adds programs to the Windows Firewall's Exceptions list, which will no longer prevent Windows Firewall from accessing the network. Pointing the other two buttons will continue to block the program.

"Exceptions" make the program live

Figure 2: Programs added to the "Exceptions" will be able to access the network

Windows Firewall can pre-empt some programs Accessing the network without blocking, if the program can't run because it is blocked, you can solve the problem like this. To have a program access the network (such as Cute FTP 5.0 XP) follow the steps below.

Step 1: Type “wscui.cpl” in “Start” → “Run” and click “OK”, then click “Windows Firewall” in “Security Center”.

Step 2: In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click the Exceptions tab and then click Add Program.

Step 3: Find the CuteFTP program in the list displayed in the Add Program dialog. If the program or service you want to allow is not listed, you can find the program or service you want to add by browsing.

Adding a program to the Exceptions list has the following advantages: 1. You don't have to know the port number used by the program. 2. The ports used by the programs in the Exceptions list are only opened when the program is running (open ports are like opening a hole through a firewall, and a large number of open ports make the computer more vulnerable).

Open the designated port

Figure 3: You can open the close-up port for some programs

If you add the program to the "Exceptions" list, the program still If you are unable to work, or if you still cannot find the program by "Browse", you can manually open the port where the program accesses the network. A reliable way to determine the port used by the program is to view the product manual. If you can't find a list of ports used by the program, you can use the "Netstat.exe" command in command line mode, which shows the current program application port, which also determines the port used by a program. To open these ports, you can do the following (using CuteFTP as an example).

Step 1: Open Windows Firewall Click the Exceptions tab and click Add Port.

Step 2: Type a name for the port and click OK. In this case, type "CuteFTP".

Step 3: In the Add Port dialog box, type the port number you want to open in the Port Number box, and then set TCP or UDP. In this example, type port number "21", select "TCP", and click "OK" to complete the addition. To view or set the range of port exceptions, click Change Range, select the range of allowed connections, and click OK.

Applying the above method combined with the actual situation of each software, it can solve the problem that some software and games can not run normally after installing SP2.
