Non-destructive adjustment of disk partitions with PM

Usually, if you want to reduce the capacity of a partition without destroying the hard disk data or convert the partition from NTFS file system to FAT file system, we first think of PowerQuest The company's Partition Magic (hereinafter referred to as PQ Magic). Indeed, this software is powerful, easy to use, and relatively safe, but there is a problem, that is, its English version of the software support for double-byte (such as Chinese) files and folders is very poor, for example, many people use the English version of PQ Magic After converting an NTFS partition containing Chinese directories and file names into FAT32, all Chinese directory names will become question marks and cannot be accessed. Although there is a way to recover, it is very troublesome. The following Paragon Partition Manager (hereafter referred to as PM) will be very good, and there is no such problem as PQ Magic.

The interface of this software is very intuitive and easy to operate.

you can see from the figure, PM supports a variety of file systems, not only under Windows, Linux and even under almost all also included. In order to show you the PM usage method in detail, we assume the following two operations:

1. Adjust a 10GB NTFS partition (C drive) with Simplified Chinese version XP to a 6GB (C drive). , a 4GB (E disk) NTFS partition.

2, in the case of retaining all the data on the C drive (including Chinese name files and folders), convert the file system of the C drive from NTFS to FAT32

Although this software supports Chinese file names, it is required to be set. After running the PM, select the “Settings” menu under the “Hard Disk” menu, then set the time zone to +8 in the pop-up window under the “Locale Info” tab and set “Filenames” The file name) "drop-down menu is "936 Chinese PRC".

then began to reduce the size of the C drive, select the C drive you want to adjust on the PM interface, then click the right mouse button and select "Resize (Resize)" icon on the C drive, then you You can see the interface of Figure 2, here we can directly drag the slider from the icon to adjust the size of the partition we need, of course, you can also enter the corresponding size in the upper dialog box, click "OK" when finished.

If necessary, the program will tell you that this operation must restart your system and ask if you restart. Click "OK" to restart the system and enter a character interface, and wait for the PM to complete the adjustment of the partition. Note: The system may be restarted multiple times during the software adjustment process, so don't worry about not being able to enter Windows, you can naturally enter after the adjustment is completed. In addition, in the final step of the adjustment, you need to press any key to continue, so remember to press the Enter key when you see "Press Ankeny to Continue" on the screen.

restart again after the partition has been reduced, we need to create a new partition E. Before that, first create an extended partition, run PM, then select the dark green space marked with "Free", and click the right mouse button, select "Create", set the desired to be created in the pop-up window. Size the partition and select "Create an extended partition" below and click "OK". Next create a logical partition.

Right click on the dark green space marked with "Free", select "Create", specify the size of the partition to be created, click "OK", wait a moment to complete. Then the original "Green" "Free" partition becomes a brown "Unformatted", right click on the partition and select "Format", then select the file system you want to use and Volume label. Since PM will test the surface of the hard disk during this process, the speed will be a bit slow, so you can cancel the selection of "Surface Test" and click "OK". After the partition is created, you need to assign a drive letter to the newly created partition, otherwise you will not be able to access it directly. Right click on the newly created partition, select “Mount”, then select “Assign driver letter” in the pop-up window, then select “E” as the disk of this new partition in the drop-down menu on the right. symbol.

Finally, we need to convert the C drive of the NTFS file system to the FAT32 file system, select the C drive in the PM, then click the right mouse button and click "Convert" under the "Modify" menu. Select the file system you will be using from the drop-down menu in the pop-up window (the software only supports the interchange of FAT and NTFS file systems) and click "OK". Since we are converting the system disk, the program will ask to restart the system. After the conversion is completed, you can automatically return to Windows.

The use of PM is basically so much. In fact, think about it. Although PM supports multiple languages, there is still a certain distance in terms of ease of use compared with PQ Magic. For example, in our operation, there are three main steps: shrinking the C drive, creating the E drive, and converting the file system of the C drive. These three steps can be applied together in the PM and can be applied one at a time. It seems to be a waste of time. In PQ Magic, we can set multiple operations at once and suspend them, and then apply them at the same time, saving a lot of time. However, it is good to adjust the partition work is not required every day, as long as the adjustment can be unchanged after that, so this problem is not very serious.

Relative to PQ Magic, PM also has a very important feature that will not damage the data after the conversion and adjustment process is interrupted or accidentally crashed, but this is the official homepage of the product, for whether Real and effective I have not been verified, and interested friends can try it for themselves. However, it is still important to remind everyone that although these softwares claim to be non-destructive partitioning or can protect data, no one can guarantee that these softwares are absolutely reliable. Therefore, if you have your important data stored on the hard disk partition you want to operate, it is best to backup it. After all, you are not afraid of 10,000.
