Microsoft borrows OpenStreetMap to counter Google Maps service

The iPhoto app in Apple's new iPad does not use the Google Maps service, but instead uses the open source map OpenStreetMap database, while OpenStreetMap is closely related to Google's other rival Microsoft.

OpenStreetMap is an open source project with more than 500,000 people providing data support. Microsoft contributed "a lot of money" to it and hired OpenStreetMap founder Steve · in 2010; Steve Coast as the chief architect of Bing Maps. Koster is still working on the development of OpenStreetMap, and Bing also contributes map data.

The check-in service website Foursquare also abandoned Google Maps last month and switched to OpenStreetMap.
