Windows 8+Linux dual boot or can cause data loss

Computer Shop News:

Windows 8's new Fast Startup allows dual systems to boot faster, but the downside is that when users load a second system (usually Linux), local storage The data is at risk.

The reason is very simple. In the dual boot configuration, the Fast Startup option does not completely shut down Windows 8. It only forces it to go into sleep mode, so that it can get faster loading when the user exits another system and restarts Win8. speed.

Since it is in hibernation, Win8 will continue to store Windows session information, including FAT and NTFS partition file system data. When the user switches back to Windows 8, some files have been deleted or rewritten.

ntfs-3g FUSE file system driver developers have found that Linux will attempt to write data in the Windows partition, sometimes rewriting the system files stored in the menu image. When switching back to Windows 8, Fast Startup only The system is reloaded, but the lost data cannot be retrieved.

To solve this problem, ntfs-3g FUSE developers had to develop a new version that would allow Linux to set the NTFS partition to read-only.

However, most Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, and openSUSE, do not currently address this issue, so forcing the operating system to rewrite Fast Startup data is currently the best solution.
