Slimming Windows XP System Installation CD

Many of the files on the Windows XP installation CD are rarely used or even used, but they take up a certain amount of disc space. Through the method described in this article, you can make a Windows XP installation disk that is less than one hundred megabytes less than the original CD. Here, we take Windows XP Pro as an example, and use the installed Windows XP Pro as the operating platform.

Required software: 1.Windows XP Pro installation CD; 2.WinHex, a very good hex file editing and disk editing software, download address: JStt-http.skycn.net:8080/down/HA_WHex11_2SR1_ZQ.rar;3.CDImage, CDImage is a small tool for making CD image (ISO) files from Microsoft. Download address: antivirus.pchome.Net/php/tdownload2.PHP?sid=2874&url=/utility /cdr/cdimage.zip&svr=2&typ=0;4.Bbie, a small software to get the CD boot file, download address: public.www.planetmirror.com/pub/nu2files/bbIE10.zip.

First, get the files needed for installation

First, we put the Windows XP Pro installation CD into the CD-ROM drive, and then enter the path of the Windows XP Pro installer in the Windows Run dialog box. Add the installation parameter /noreboot to the fake installation, as shown in Figure 1. It should be noted that the installation type we choose should be "new installation". In addition, when the installation is to select the installation option, click the "Advanced Options" button in the window to enter the custom Windows XP options window, here " Select the Copy all installation files from the installation CD check box, as shown in Figure 2. Because the /noreboot installation parameter is used during installation, after the installation file is copied, the installation program will automatically exit and return to the desktop. At this point, two folders named $WIN_NT$.~BT and $WIN_NT$.~LS can be found in the system root directory.

Second, adjust the installation required files

In the system root directory, rename the $WIN_NT$.~LS folder to install, rename the $WIN_NT$.~BT folder to BOOT (capital). Next, move the BOOT folder to the install folder. Then enter the install folder and delete the SIZE.SIF file. Enter the BOOT folder and delete the two files migrate.inf and winnt.sif. Of course, in order to achieve unattended installation of Windows XP, we can also use our own winnt.sif file to replace the original file. If you want to make the installation CD will appear "press any key to boot from cd" prompt, then we can copy the bootfix.bin file in the original installation CD I386 folder to the BOOT folder. Finally, copy the SPNOTES, WIN51, WIN51IP, WIN51IP.SP1 files from the original installation CD to the install folder.

Third, get and modify the boot file

Enter the Bbie file directory at the command prompt, enter Bbie H: command to get the CD boot file, the obtained boot file name is image1. Bin, saved in the Bbie folder. Here H: should be changed to your own CD drive letter. Start WinHex software, open the image1.bin file in the BbIE folder, and then use the "Replace Text" function in the WinHex "Search" menu to replace the i386 in the file with BOOT (uppercase), replace it a total of 1 time, after saving Exit, as shown in Figure 4. Start WinHex software, open the setupldr.bin file in the BOOT folder, and then use the "Replace Text" function in the WinHex "Search" menu to replace the i386 in the file with BOOT (uppercase), replacing 4 times in total, after saving Exit

4. Make an ISO CD image file

Enter the directory of the CDImage file at the command prompt, enter the following command to generate the ISO image file, cdimage -lMyXP -bc:\\Bbie\\image1. Bin -h -n -m -oc:\\install c:\\Myxp.iso. Here "c:\\BbIE\\image1.bin" is the full path of the CD boot file, and "c:\\Myxp.iso" is the save path of the ISO CD image file. The detailed parameter description of Cdimage can be obtained by directly inputting cdimage.exe (without parameters). After the above settings, a CD image file named Myxp.iso will be generated in the root directory of the C drive. Its size is only 448MB, which is 112MB less than the original installation CD of 560MB! Finally, it can be easily burned out by the image burning function of Nero or Alcohol 120% software, so a slimmed Windows XP installation CD is made.
