Win XP Lite "Eiger" more details

Microsoft Windows Division Barry Goffe and Jon Murchinson revealed in a phone interview some details of the simplified version of Windows XP codenamed Eiger. Barry explained that Eiger's goal is to provide a better solution for PC users who use backward configurations.

Currently, some companies some of the "seniority" of up to 5--6 years, Win9x systems running NT4 or older computers still in service, but due to financial or business strategy these computer has not been updated. These companies are also concerned about security issues, but Microsoft is no longer providing technical support for NT4 and Win9x systems, so security updates for these systems are no longer available.
Computers with different operating systems are difficult to manage or cannot manage at all, and Windows XP cannot run on these backward computers. Microsoft understands this and has proposed Eiger, a solution that provides the latest OS for outdated computers. This streamlined version of Windows XP can run on older computers and can be managed by client management software such as SMS or SUS.
The following "not" may explain the nature of Eiger.

*Not a thin client, more like a lite client

*Not a RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) client, Eiger runs on a local CPU, of course, you can also add RDP Client.

*It is not a Windows XP "light" version that can run its own programs. Eiger strictly limits the programs that can be executed.

*Not a low-cost, streamlined Windows XP "Starter" version designed for developing countries.

*Not for computing scenarios based on general commercial servers.

*Not a normal operating system, many components were removed.

So Eiger is how to generate it? Streamlined by XP pro? Or is it made up of components added by Windows PE? neither. Eiger is based on Windows XP Embedded (XPE Embedded Edition XP), but since XPE's license is not for end users but for embedded devices, Microsoft has combined XPe and XP Pro to produce Eiger. For example, Windows XP Embedded does not support Plug and Play (PnP), which is fully supported by Eiger.
Customers can add components to build Eiger images, just like setting up Windows XP embedded and Windows CE, but the optional components are limited. Eiger has been designed to accomplish the following tasks:

1.Based on RDP client, minimal installation

2. Third-party client (Citrx)

3.Internet Explorer (to use the Web program)

4.Windows media player (such as video teaching (playing in terminal services poor streaming performance)

5. terminal emulation (5250, telnet)

6. Convenient management, secure client

At present, Eiger is in small-scale test, because there are few target users, so there will be no public Beta. Eiger is still in the early stage of development, so it is listed. Date, licensing method and pricing are still unknown.

The current Eiger client image size is about 350MB, which can run on a Pentium II machine with 65MB of RAM. Of course, the memory is preferably 128MB. EIEr can be from the hard disk. , CD-ROM or RIS (Remote Install Service) server starts from the start of USB functionality is also developing them.

trivia, Eiger in Switzerland is the name of a mountain, take the project code-named Eiger because of product manager From Switzerland, huh, huh.
