Frequently Asked Questions

1. Third-party software/plug-ins can't be upgraded

Since the added security features in xp SP2 include malicious website blocking related functions and pop-up filters, this may be related to your current operating system. The installed third-party IE plugin creates a conflict. The 3721 Internet Assistant plugin and the Java Virtual Machine plugin are known to cause this problem. The solution is to uninstall the 3721 and java virtual machine plugins. Of course, there may be third-party plug-ins that can cause such problems, so Tianyuan recommends that you completely uninstall all third-party plug-ins that are connected to Outlook, IE, and the resource browser before upgrading, and then upgrade and install them.

The commonly used non-Microsoft official browser third-party plug-ins are as follows:

3721 assistant
Baidu search
google toolbar
cnnic Chinese domain name resolution tool
sina toolbar
Auto-fill toolbar
java virtual machine plug-in

Users can refer to the above table according to their own machine environment, selectively delete, and then upgrade. Such third-party plug-ins usually have a separate removal program, which can be found in the "Control Panel" - "Add /Remove Programs" and deleted.

2. System file protection in anti-virus software/firewall can't be upgraded

Due to factors such as the replacement of windows xp system files during SP2 upgrade, some third-party anti-virus software/firewall will be used during the upgrade process. Automatic protection of critical files is not replaced, which can result in an upgrade failure. Therefore, it is best to turn off all anti-virus/firewall, unnecessary application software, and disconnect the network connection to prevent the virus from entering the upgrade and upgrade in a stand-alone environment.

3. The account permission problem caused the upgrade to fail

Please use the administrator account of the initial system to upgrade (the default name is administrator, of course you may have renamed), not other accounts (even if the account) Has administrator rights). Otherwise, there may be some weird problems after the upgrade.

4. Using third-party xp interface beautification software such as stylexp to cause key files to be replaced/modified, resulting in upgrade failure

Since third-party beautification software such as stylexp will modify some key system files, it will be SP2 when upgrading. It is impossible to judge whether the xp before the upgrade is a regular xp version. The most common problem is that the boot.ini file has been modified.

This file is in the root directory of your system disk (usually in the root directory of the c drive). By default, it is a hidden property file. You can do this in the "Resource Browser" - "Tools" - "Files". In the "Clip Options" - "View", remove the hook in front of the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and "Hide Known File Extensions" options, and click "OK" to view the contents of the boot.ini file.

Open boot.ini with Notepad and find that the default startup options have been modified.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /kernel=xLogo.exe

Remove the red word above and leave
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDOWS ="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

(Note, here is just an example, your hard disk, partition may be different from me, just make sure that the last boot parameter contains /fastdetect, other parameters Always remove it) After restarting the operating system, SP2 will be upgraded smoothly.

5. The problem of upgrading from the early SP2 beta version to the official version:

Since Microsoft specifically emphasized the topic of security in SP2, the release of this patch package, in addition to the upgrade of the inherent patch, A milestone with Microsoft's transition from easy-to-use operating system development to secure operating system development. In order to ensure the security and stability of the official version, Microsoft released multiple test versions of 2135, 2149, 2180 and so on before the official release of SP2.

A lot of friends who like to contact new technologies and participate in the evaluation for the first time have successively installed SP2 for each version to install and test. However, due to various factors, is the official version of SP2 able to correctly identify these test versions? At least in the 2180 test version, upgrading the previous test version requires the following work.

Regedit opens the registry and finds
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion primary key to delete the two keys CSDVersion and CurrentBuildNumber.

After restarting (note that if you do not restart it may cause the file to be deleted when you delete atapi.sys below)

After restarting, delete or change atapi.sys directly. The name will do.

Then you can make a smooth upgrade, otherwise the upgrade process may cause the atapi.sys file to be used and the upgrade will fail.

Solution to the problem

There may be so many problems in the upgrade process. Because SP2 improves the security features, it will occasionally cause some third parties after the upgrade. The software can not be used, the network connection is faulty, let us take a look at it?

1. I can't open the link when using IE, but using a third-party browser (such as myie, mozilla) is fine?

A friend who encountered this situation was caused by not uninstalling the browser plug-in such as 3721 before the upgrade. The workaround is to disable pop-up filtering for other third-party plugins. (In the test process, Tianyuan found that Google's toolbar can be used normally in SP2, but it is recommended to turn it off)

2. The anti-virus software system does not work after installing SP2, or can't upgrade?

Changes made to Windows XP SP2 focus on the following four areas: network protection, memory protection, email security, and browser protection. The most affected parts include PRC (remote program call) and DCOM (distribution). Component object mode), Windows firewall, memory protection. After installing SP2, a new "Security Center" will be added, which will display the current status of "Firewall" and "Virus Protection". This is what Microsoft officially said - anti-virus certification.

According to Tianyuan’s writing, there are still some anti-virus software that cannot be correctly identified or supported by SP2. The following is a general list for your reference:

Symantec AntiVirus (Norton): SP2 will report that the anti-virus software is installed, but its status is unknown;

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition : SP2 can Identification, can support

Kingsoft Internet Security: SP2 prompts can not find anti-virus software, does not know the way, sweat

Kaspersky Anti-Virus stand-alone version (Russia): can identify, can use ;

Rising: can identify, can support;

F-secure: can identify, can support;

McAfee: can identify, can support, but can not upgrade; The solution to this problem is as follows)

panda: can identify, can support

Trend Micro: can identify, can support;

three domestic anti-virus companies, I Only tested two, kv3000 can not be tested because there is no genuine disk.

3. After installing SP2, CS can't play online. After entering the game, everything is normal. But after selecting the task, the mouse can't move. The character can't move;

Because SP2 has a big change in security, there are A considerable part of the game will run in SP2. There is only a problem waiting for the game maker to release the patch. Fortunately, the patch for cs already has the CD4.23.1.1 version for SP2.
As for other games, I believe After the official version of SP2 is released, each game manufacturer will release the patch as soon as possible, so stay tuned.

4. Can't display verification code for some sites (xbm graphics file support problem)?

Please refer to the computer clinic for this question.

5. Sharing file transfers over a LAN is very slow!

In a local network environment, two xp installed SP2, one with samba linux, the problem is that any xp download files from linux are very slow (normal before the upgrade), and The transfer speed of files between two xp is normal.

This problem is due to the SP2 upgrade, some improvements have been made to the sharing security, the old version of samba is not enough support.

6. Many programs work fine, networking is normal, but can't be upgraded?

Because the security of SP2 has indeed been strengthened a lot, especially the permissions on the components are more strict. Therefore, many programs that run well under sp1 need to be manually set under SP2.

Take the above mentioned McAfee anti-virus software as an example:

Type "dcomcnfg.exe" in the "Start → Run" dialog box, or select "Administrative Tools" from the control panel. You can open the "Component Services" window, "Console Root" - "Component Services" - "Computer" - "My Computer" - "DCOM Configuration" project, find the "FrameworkService" item (this is mcafee antivirus) To use the scan, right-click to open the Properties window, switch to the "Security" tab, select "Custom" under the "Startup and Activation Permissions" section, then click "Edit", in the "Start Permissions" dialog box that pops up, Select "Add", enter your Windows login account and system account, both accounts are socially "local activation" permissions, and finally "OK."

The same reason, encountered other can not be upgraded In the program, you can also check the configuration of dcom.

Although the steps are really troublesome, I think that after the official version of SP2 comes out, the manufacturer will provide a patch package for SP2. Some of these problems are just the beginning stage, or they have to be manually set by ourselves.

7. Can't view some webpages or chm files and MSDN Library problems

Some machines are upgraded to After xp, there will be cases where you cannot access certain sites, or chm files, and install Microsoft's msdn to see a blank. For solutions to this type of problem, you can clear the system c:\\ :\\Documents and Settings\\<user ID>\\Local Settings\\Temporary Internet Files\\ All the file files are fixed. If you can't delete the prompt, you can create a new super account login, and then delete all the accounts under the original account ie temporary directory. File, then log out and log in with the original account.

Note that the "Clear Cache File" function in IE is invalid, and the method of deleting all files in the temp directory is valid. It is estimated to be the index under Content.IE5\\ The .dat file was corrupted or locked during the upgrade process!??

8. The Internet was very fast in sp1, how did SP2 become very slow?

The NIC driver needs to be updated. Please visit the homepage of the NIC or Microsoft's windows update to upgrade your driver.

In the current upgrade, the problems encountered are probably these. I hope this article Can help all friends to upgrade smoothly and enjoy the new features and security of xp SP2.
