Win2000 experience: Professional Edition Installation Guide

Following Windows 2000 Beta3 and RC1, Microsoft released Windows 2000 RC2 (Release Candidate 2), the second edition of Windows 2000 Candidate Test on September 15. This may be the official launch of Windo ws 2000 in 1999. The last beta released before.

After getting the latest Windows 2000 RC2, we installed it for trial. Because Windows20 00 Professional is more common to users, we will take it as an example.

一,秣马厉兵

Windows 2000 Professional pre-installation work must be done well, otherwise it is difficult to successfully install successfully, which is summarized after many failures, may wish Take a closer look.

1. The hardware configuration needs to be explained. Although we saw that the minimum configuration of the system only requires 32MB of memory in the installation instructions of Windows 2000 Professional, in fact, we installed Windows 2000 Professional RC2 on another K2-350, 32MB machine. After running, I found that 32MB is really unbearable for Windows 2000 Professional, unless you want to experience the taste of running Win95 on 486.

2. Operating System Our hard disk has already installed the second version of Windows 98 Simplified Chinese. Because Windows 20 00 cannot be directly upgraded from Windows 98 Second Edition, we use the dual boot installation of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 98 Simplified Chinese.

Setting up a dual boot installation requires Windows 2000 Professional to be installed on a different disk partition than the original operating system, so we will empty the D partition of the hard disk, leaving 2.8 GB of space for Windows 2000 Professional installation. We recommend that you take a similar approach —— that is, empty a disk partition to install a new operating system. It is recommended to install Windows 2000 Professional partitions larger than 1GB, because the installation of the operating system itself requires at least 500 ~ 650MB of space (depending on the number of components), and after the installation is completed, there are generally some system tools and other applications need to be more More hard disk space. Note that if you want to access a compressed hard disk partition in Windows 2000, you must first uncompress all compressed hard disk partitions, otherwise the access will not succeed.

If you have already installed an earlier version of Windows 2000 Professional, such as Beta3, you can choose to upgrade directly during installation.

3. Hardware Compatibility In theory, Windows 2000 Professional should have better hardware compatibility than Win98, but in the Windows 2000 Professional installation instructions, Microsoft specifically emphasized that users should check if their hardware is supported by Windows 2000 Professional. All hardware lists supported by Windows 2000 are noted in the Hcl.txt documentation. You can find this file in the Support folder of the Windows 2000 CD. The latest hardware compatibility documentation can be found online at htm.

Windows 2000 Professional emphasizes in the installation instructions that hardware not included in the hardware description table, Windo ws 2000 is basically not supported. However, we found that the actual situation is much better. For example, our source LTN-362 optical drive can't be found in the Hcl.txt file, but there is no problem in the installation detection. Ok, everything is ready, let's go.

Second, install a small note

1. Installation under DOS If you want to install Windows 2000 Profe ssinal directly under Windows 95/98, you can skip this section and refer directly to the next section, “Installation under Windows”.

Installing Windows 2000 under DOS Professinal can also be divided into two situations: floppy boot and CD boot. Under normal circumstances, Windows 2000 Professinal can automatically enter the CD to boot, if your motherboard and CMOS do not support the CD self-starting, you can only use the floppy disk to start the installation.

It is important to note that you should copy the HIMEM.SYS and SMARTDRV.EXE files in the boot floppy disk, and add the device=SMARTDRV.EXE statement to the Confi g.sys file (must be started during installation) SMARTDRV back buffer, otherwise the installation process will make you cry without tears).

The installer first copies the 140-megabyte program from the CD to the hard disk. This is the program file needed to run the installation wizard in the next step, which takes about six minutes. After the file is copied, remove the floppy disk and start it directly from the hard disk. Go to the second step of the installation process: text guide installation. Text-guided installation is mainly to complete the choice of W 2000 2000 Professional file format (FAT, FAT32 or NTFS format) and basic system file copy, after which the installation is done by the system itself.

2. Installation under Windows

If you choose to install Windows 2000 Professinal directly under Windows 95/98, you can go directly to the installation wizard under the current operating system. This is much more intuitive and simple than the installation interface under DOS. Windows 2000 Pr ofessional provides two installation modes: reinstallation and upgrade installation. If you are using English Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 3.51/4.0 Workstation, or have installed earlier versions of Windows 2000 Pr ofessional Beta 3/RC1, you can upgrade directly on the Windows platform, which is good Keep the current system settings.

However, Windows 2000 Professional RC2 does not support upgrading directly from the Chinese version of Windows 9X /NT to Windows 2000, so in general, users need to choose to reinstall.

After inserting the Windows 2000 Professinal CD into the CD-ROM drive, the installation wizard will first detect the current operating system and find that the current operating system does not support the upgrade, which warns you and prompts the user that Windows 2000 will reinstall the system.

The installation wizard then prompts the user to select an installation option. First select the system language, select the main language (Main Lan -guage) in the selection bar above, of course we choose Chinese (PRC); in the selection bar below, select the additional language that you may use in the future, press With Ctrl and a click of the mouse, you can choose multiple applications. In the future, Windows 2000 Professional will support applications in these languages. Most of the Japanese games we played before required Japanese Windows support, so we had to install a Japanese system that was rarely used in the machine. In Windows 2000, this problem was solved.

After choosing a language, be sure to go to “Advanced Options to set it. To establish a dual boot configuration, Windows 2000 Profession needs to be installed in a different disk partition than the current operating system. In general, our operating system is installed on the C drive, so the Windows 2000 Professinal installer will also install the system by default. Go to the C drive. The installation partition that allows customization of Windows 2000 must be set in the "Advanced Options" setting. If you want to install through the network or hard disk, you must also customize the Windows 2000 installation file location in the "advanced options". In addition, you can also choose to copy all the installation files to the hard disk while installing Wind ows 2000, which is convenient for future installation and upgrade.

If you want to install more colors in your Windows 2000, you can go to the "Accessibility Options" option. For those who are not very good at eyes, you can choose "Magnifier" (Magnifier). Zoom in to the prompts during the installation process, or select “Narrator” to explain the installation information all the way, especially to mention that this is for the blind, and of course ordinary people can enjoy it, indicating that Microsoft considers it very carefully.
