Talking about Win 2K disk space quota management and allocation method

A. Win 2K disk quota

A computer running Windows 2K can allocate the disk space used by the user on demand. As long as it is on a drive with the NTFS 5.0 file system format, the disk space limit for users can be achieved by enabling disk quota management. Disk quota is a file storage management based on users and partitions. With disk quota management, administrators can properly allocate disk space for local users or remote users logged into the local computer. Each user can only use the disk space allocated by the administrator. The disk quota is transparent to each user. When the user queries the available disk space, the system only reports the space allowed by the quota to the user. When the quota limit is exceeded, the system will prompt that the disk space is full. The disk quota calculates the usage of the user's disk space based on the disk space occupied by all the files owned by the user, regardless of the location of the file. The ownership of a file is identified by the security identifier in the security information of the file. If the user takes ownership of a file on the drive, the disk space he has used must be added to the space occupied by the file.

II.Enable disk quotas

1. Log in to the Win 2K system as a system administrator or a member of the administrator group, right click on the drive using the NTFS 5.0 file system format. Select the "Properties" item, and we will see a new option page "quota" in the Drive" Properties" dialog. Select the "Quotas" tab and check the box next to "Enable Quota Management", as shown in Figure 1.

2. When you enable disk quotas, you can set two values: disk quota limit and disk quota warning level. The disk quota limit specifies the amount of disk space that the user is allowed to use. The warning level specifies the value that the user is approaching its quota limit. For example, you can set the user's disk quota limit to 30MB and set the disk quota warning level to 25MB. In this case, the user can store files of up to 30MB on the drive. If the user stores more than 25MB of files on the drive, the disk quota system is logged as a system event.

When disk quotas are enabled on a drive that already contains files, Win 2K calculates the disk space used by all users who copied files, saved files, or took file ownership at that point in time. The quota limit and quota warning level are then applied to all current users based on the results of the calculation, as well as the users who used the drive from that point in time. You can then set different quotas or disable disk quotas for one or more users as needed. You can also set quotas for users who have not yet copied files, saved files, and taken ownership of files on the drive.

3. If you select the "Reject disk space to users exceeding the quota limit" option, when the user has used the disk space to reach the quota limit, the user will receive “ insufficient disk space & rdquo The error message, if you do not delete or move some existing files to make room available, you can not write any data on the drive. If you don't want to deny users access to the drive but want to track each user's use of disk space, it is useful to enable disk quotas and not limit disk space usage.

4. Select the "Log event" option when the user exceeds the quota limit and the "Events" event when the user exceeds the warning level, so that whenever the user exceeds the quota warning level or quota limit, The event is written to the Windows system log on the computer. Administrators can view these events by filtering the disk event type using the Event Viewer.

III. Management of Disk Quota Items

After disk quota management is enabled, all users use the default quota limit and quota warning level set when the disk quota is started. With quota project management, you can set the appropriate disk quota for each user, maintain the user's disk quota settings, and record the disk space usage of each user.

To enter the disk quota project management method, right-click on the drive in NTFS 5.0 file system format, select the “Attributes” item, and enter the “Drive Properties” dialog box; select “ The Quotas & Options tab, click the "Quotas" button to enter the "Quotas" window, as shown in Figure 2.

Adding New Quota Items

Before users can write data to a drive, you can use the “New Quota Item" feature to set quota limits and warning levels for specific users. The method is as follows:

In the “Quotas Project” window, select the “Quotas” menu and select “New Quota Item” to pop up the “Select User” dialog box; if it is in the domain User, select the corresponding domain name in the "Find range"; if it is a user on the local computer, select the name of the local computer. Select the user you want to add in the user list and click the “Add” button and click “OK", as shown in Figure 3.

In the "Add New Quota Item" dialog box, set the disk quota option for the selected user according to actual needs. As shown in Figure 4.

After the settings are completed and confirmed, return to the “Quota Items” window and you will see the newly added quota items in the list.

V. Deleting Quota Items

In the “Quota Items” window, click the user item you want to delete, and then select ““Delete Quota Items” in the “Quotas” menu. & rdquo;, or select the specified user quota item, right click and select “ delete & rdquo; item;

If the "disk quota" dialog box appears, click & ldquo; yes & rdquo;, and single Click on the file you want to work with, select one of the following buttons, then click “Close”.

· Delete: Delete the selected file from the drive. · Get Ownership: Provides ownership of the selected file on the drive. · Move: Moves the selected file to the specified drive.

VI. Modify Quota Projects

If you want to modify the quota limits and quota warning levels for specific users, you can do this in the "Quotas Project" window. The method is as follows:

Double-click the quota item to be modified in the list of items in the “Quota Item” window, or select a quota item and right click and select the “Attributes” item to pop up the specified user. “Quota Settings” dialog. In this dialog, you can set quota limits and quota warning levels.

VII. Creating Quota Reports

If you want to keep the user disk quotas in the form of files so far, you can do the following:

Open for An application that creates a quota report, such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel;

In the "Quotas Project" window, select the user items to include in the quota report and drag the selected lines to In the program that creates the report, for example, drag it into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or a Microsoft Word document. The transmitted data remains in the same column and item order as in the "Quotas" window, as shown in Figure 5.

VIII. Instructions for using disk quotas

In Win 2K systems, the disk quota management function can be enabled only on drives that use the NTFS 5.0 file system format. The properties of the drive in the FAT32 file system format are used. The dialog box does not see the "quota" tab, and you cannot apply disk quota management. If you want to enable disk quota management on a FAT32 file system format drive, you must convert the file system to NTFS 5.0. We can use the file system conversion tool Convert provided by Win 2K to convert.

To enable disk quota management, be sure to log in to the Win 2K system as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group, otherwise the drive will be in the NTFS 5.0 file system format on the Drive's Properties dialog box. You can't see the "quota" option page.

When disk quotas are enabled, there is a slight increase in system overhead, resulting in some performance degradation. In order to resolve this contradiction, you can make full use of the auditing capabilities provided by Win 2K disk quotas while ensuring computer performance by periodically enabling and then disabling quotas.
