Let the XP image file be a little smaller

Recently, a friend of the author encountered an upset. He found that after installing the Windows XP Professional and Services Pack 1a patch upgrade files, the total file size has reached 1.7GB. The lmage image file backed up with Ghost is also 1.2GB big. It can't be stored in a CD-R burning disc, so he thought of asking for advice.

This problem can't help me.

In general, installing Windows XP Professional does require 1.x GB of hard disk space, so that the image file backed up using the Ghost program cannot be engraved on a CD-R disc with a maximum capacity of 700MB. In fact, there are some huge data projects in Windows XP that occupy hundreds of megabytes of capacity. You can remove them and use Ghost's highest ratio compression function to put Windows XP Professional with SP1a patch information. On the CD. The following assumes that the user is reinstalling the Windows XP operating system and only installing the SP1a patch for file deletion.

First, delete windows xp useless projects

windows xp stores some useless data, including system restore, hibernation and virtual memory, etc., users only need to follow them as follows Delete to save space.

1. System Restore itself periodically backs up data in the computer, so that users can choose the previous location to return to a good state when there is a problem. Since this will cause some consumption of hard disk space, the user can first remove this function.

The method is: Go to “Start” → “Settings” → “Control Panel” → “System Restore” and uncheck the “Turn off System Restore on All Drives” item (Figure 1).

2. The sleep function will store the data in the memory to the hard disk and shut down. When the computer resumes from hibernation, it can immediately return to the original operating state. The feature itself reserves hundreds of megabytes of space (depending on the capacity of the hard drive), and the user can turn it off before doing the Ghost image.

The method is: Go to “Start” → “Settings” → “Control Panel” → “Power Options” → “Hibernate”, and then delete the “Enable Hibernation” item (Figure 2).

3, the last is virtual memory, windows xp defaults to double the capacity of the hard disk for data exchange, this is the most occupied space, the user can turn it off to make the image file The capacity is greatly reduced. When restoring, it is recommended that you restart it as "system management size" to avoid the performance degradation of the computer due to the lack of virtual memory.

Method: Go to “Start” → “Control Panel” → “System” → “Advanced” → “Performance” → “Settings” → “Advanced” → “Virtual Memory” → “Change”, then click Select "No paging file" → "Settings" (Figure 3). Then restart the computer once, the pagefile.sys file in the system will be deleted automatically.

4, in addition to the above items, the user can also delete the "C:\\windows\\Driver Caches", "C:\\windows\\PCHEALTH\\UploadLB", "C:\\windows\\Temp" folder Files can also reduce tens of megabytes of hard disk space.

Second, use Ghost hidden super compression instructions

After removing the main large-capacity files in Windows XP through the above steps, the user has saved hundreds of MB of hard disk space. Now with the highest compression method of Ghost 2003, you can successfully push the windows xp image file into a 700MB capacity burning disc.

1. Start the computer with the Windows 98 boot disk and enter the Dos mode. Then enter the Ghost.exe directory and enter the following command:

ghost -clone,mode=pdump,src=1:1, Dst=d:\\xpGhost gho -z9 -fx -sure

The src=1:1 in the command line represents the mirrored windows xp, which is the first partition of the first hard disk (usually C: ). If you install Win98 /XP dual operating system (XP in the second partition such as D: then change to 1:2; and dst = ... is the storage location of the specified image file, note that this location can not be installed XP partition; -Z9 Represents compression at the maximum compression ratio (the ratio can range from 1 to 9, with 1 being the lowest compression ratio but fast; 9 being the highest compression ratio but slow).

2, waiting for the image file to be completed After restarting the computer, you will find that the image file size is only 671MB, which is suitable for burning into a 700MB CD-R disc for storage backup.
